About West Marine: West Marine was born from Randy Repass’s love of the sea. The Sunnyvale, California, tech firm employee started selling marine rope by mail in 1968 as a way to counter what he saw as the cold nature of his day job. Opening his first boating supply store a few years later, Repass grew West Marine into an international enterprise with more than 300 North American retail stores, a 1,000 page annual catalog, and international sales to customers in 150 countries.
